In September 2022, ZPE’s ‘Facil-ICT’ research group held a co-creation workshop on ICT-based communication between local social welfare and health facilities and people in rural dispersed communities in Ghana. For two days, representatives of local social welfare and health authorities, planning and IT officers of local governments as well as civil society stakeholders discussed communication challenges and ICT-enabled solutions in the delivery of social and health services.
The results of a ZPE study on communication between local social and health authorities and citizens in Ghana provided a basis for the development of corresponding ‘prototypes’. The study surveyed more than 1,000 people in 27 rural communities in the past year on their access, usage patterns and skills in dealing with communication technologies and the internet.
Both workshop and study were part of the project ‘Facilitating the Interaction between Citizens and Local Governments through Information and Communication Technology’ (FACIL-ICT), ZPE is currently implementing together with the district assemblies of Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Suhum in Ghana’s Eastern Region. Selected ‘prototypes’ are now to be elaborated further in a participatory process with local stakeholders and implemented by mid-2023. The project is funded by the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and Engagement Global.
